Statewide Conference, Rochester, NY |

The Science
and Technology Entry Program (STEP) was established by the Legislature
in 1985 to identify historically underrepresented or economically
disadvantaged students in grades 7-12 and to prepare them to enter
postsecondary degree programs in scientific, technical, and health-related
fields. Through a competitive proposal process, STEP grants are
awarded to postsecondary institutions with registered science, technical,
or health-related programs, and/or programs leading to professional
licensure. STEP projects must establish collaborative relationships
with local schools with enrollment that is at least 20 percent African
American, Hispanic, or Native American and provide programs and
services designed to enhance student's basic skills and to increase
their level of preparation in math, the sciences, and technology.
STEP is funded
by the New York State Education Department and Mercy College.
